Better Together: Three Pairs of Union Buddies Share Their Bond聽

April 18, 2025

You鈥檝e seen them. They attend every local union meeting together. They roadtrip to Delegate Assembly and Summer Institute in the same car. They finish each other鈥檚 sentences. Some even suspect they share the same brain. They are union buddies, a crucial component of what makes the 黑料正能量 work.

And they鈥檙e super fun.

We caught up with three of 黑料正能量鈥檚 most recognizable pairs at the 2025 Delegate Assembly in Boise a couple of weekends ago. So slip on your friendship bracelets and settle in, because these dynamic duos have a lot of love to share.聽聽

鈥楾he Twins鈥

The buddies: Amanda Campbell and Aneatra Walker

Their local union: American Falls Education Association

How they met: Campbell and Walker met 13 years ago at their school and have taught the same grade level for seven years.

Why they鈥檙e union buds: Campbell and Walker started pairing up for union events three years ago 鈥渂ecause I鈥檓 bossy,鈥 Walker laughed. 鈥淚鈥檓 like, 鈥楢manda, you should do this!鈥 鈥

Campbell said Walker鈥檚 infectious enthusiasm has helped bring her out of her shell. 鈥淪he is the bright, bubbly one,鈥 Campbell said.

They both have big union responsibilities, too: Walker serves as the region vice president for Region 5 and Campbell is a building representative. That means more opportunities for union events, including their favorite so far: Summer Institute, which is hosted by the Center for Teaching and Learning every July in Lewiston.

鈥淚t was the first time we鈥檇 gone, and we didn鈥檛 feel guilty about leaving our husbands at home because we were working,鈥 Walker said, using exaggerated air quotes.

All jokes aside, Campbell said, Summer Institute was a productive trip. 鈥淣ot only were we working for ourselves academically, but we got so much done for the school year, as well,鈥 she said.

And during the school year, Campbell and Walker have a reputation for being inseparable. 鈥淲e are not Amanda and Aneatra,鈥 Campbell said. 鈥淚t鈥檚, 鈥榃here are The Twins?鈥 If they can鈥檛 find me in my room, they go to her room. And if they can鈥檛 find her in her room, they come to mine.鈥

And even when they鈥檙e not in school, Walker and Campbell are there for each other, picking up the phone late at night or looking out for each other鈥檚 mental health and wellbeing.

鈥淵ou know, education is stressful,鈥 Campbell said. 鈥淵ou need that someone you can talk to, at any time, that鈥檚 going to get it.鈥

鈥楥补谤尘颈础苍驳颈别/础苍驳颈别颁补谤尘颈鈥

The buddies: Carmi Scheller and Angie Hickman

Their local union: West Ada Education Association

How they met: Scheller and Hickman 鈥 both longtime, active union members who also serve on 黑料正能量鈥檚 Board of Directors 鈥 kept seeing each other at organizing events.

Why they鈥檙e union buds: They were in separate local unions when they met, and Scheller鈥檚 was going through a turbulent period.

鈥淎s our Nampa group was going through a lot,鈥 Scheller said, 鈥渢here were many people that would observe we laughed all the time through traumatic stuff. The way we managed it and kept doing work we needed to do was by finding things to laugh about, and it drew some people to us.鈥

One of those people was Hickman. 鈥淚 became a cool kid!鈥 she said.

When Scheller joined the West Ada Education Association, she and Hickman served on the executive board together and continued to bond. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 think you sustain in this work if you don鈥檛 have people you enjoy doing it with,鈥 Scheller said.

鈥淲hat was really neat, too, is that our union relationship became a very personal relationship, and we鈥檝e both gone through some pretty traumatic things,鈥 Hickman said. 鈥淎nd being able to have that support really did grow from the union.鈥

Now, Hickman and Scheller work as one unit. Hickman is detail-oriented and a time manager; Scheller is a big-picture communicator. When Hickman has an idea, Scheller processes it and determines how best to share it. Often during meetings, one of them will make a motion and the other will second it.

But their personal lives are also intertwined: 鈥淢y family adopted her,鈥 Hickman said, because Scheller鈥檚 extended family lives outside of Idaho.

鈥淚鈥檓 not the only adoptee,鈥 Scheller said. 鈥淭hey adopted my husband, as well. And he鈥檚 not as social, so he鈥檚 like, 鈥楾hank you!鈥

Their fame has spread throughout WAEA, where they are known as AngieCarmi or CarmiAngie.

鈥淲e didn鈥檛 even realize the AngieCarmi/CarmiAngie thing was a thing until people were texting us from (an event in) Chicago, and they鈥檙e like, 鈥業 saw people who were just like you! They鈥檙e together all the time!鈥 Hickman said. 鈥淥r, 鈥榃e鈥檙e going to be the next AngieCarmi!鈥

Scheller and Hickman plan on being joined at the hip for years to come.

鈥淚 think the work is so important,鈥 Scheller said. 鈥淏ut it鈥檚 so much easier when you鈥檙e doing it with friends.鈥

鈥楳errill Stroupe鈥

The buddies: Melissa Stroupe and Andrea Merrill

Their local union: Lewiston Education Association

How they met: Merrill and Stroupe knew each other before they started teaching 鈥 in fact, their husbands are friends, too.

Why they鈥檙e union buds: They began collaborating on union work several years ago. Their friendship has created a symbiotic relationship.

鈥淪he asks,鈥 Merrill said, 鈥渁nd I do. That鈥檚 literally how it works.鈥

鈥淚 say jump,鈥 Stroupe said, 鈥渁nd she 鈥︹

鈥淒oes it!鈥 Merrill laughed. 鈥淎nd other people started noticing.鈥

That has worked to their union鈥檚 advantage. Members trust that if they share information with one, it will be shared with the other. 鈥淲e鈥檙e a package deal,鈥 Merrill said.

When Stroupe started organizing for the GEM program, she knew she鈥檇 have at least one member on board. And Merrill did sign up almost immediately.

They also intuitively understand how to communicate with each other. Stroupe said she 鈥渟quirrels,鈥 following a random thought, and Merrill grounds her. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not the same at all,鈥 Stroupe said.

鈥淏ut I鈥檓 catching onto the crazy,鈥 Merrill laughed.

Their inseparability is so well known that their recent trip to Delegate Assembly had some of their fellow union members worried because they hadn鈥檛 been spotted together in two days. 鈥淚t was the longest we鈥檝e ever been apart,鈥 Stroupe said.

They freely add to each other鈥檚 work and personal schedules and make commitments on the others鈥 behalf 鈥 in fact, during their interview, Stroupe informed Merrill she had volunteered her to be Stroupe鈥檚 sub for a bunko game held by retired members.

That鈥檚 just how their friendship works, they said.

鈥淚 feel like she goes Mach 90 all the time and you have to say things one time and it鈥檚 done,鈥 Merrill said.

鈥淎nd I feel like everyone needs a Merrill,鈥 Stroupe said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the support that you have. It鈥檚 not just a venting partner. It鈥檚 knowing that if I鈥檓 having a bad day, or if either one of us is dealing with something, we can talk to each other. It鈥檚 no judgement 鈥 it鈥檚 how I鈥檓 handling it, what I鈥檓 feeling.

鈥淎ll of this work, as much as we are passionate about it, is still hard,鈥 she continued. 鈥淚t鈥檚 still taking a lot of extra effort, and it鈥檚 nice to have a person who can still support you. And Merrill always supports me.鈥
