DESCRIPTION:We will examine dyslexia and the reading brain. Participants will learn how the brain acquires reading skills\, what the science of reading (SoR) is and isn’t\, and how it provides a universal framework for literacy\, challenging the misconception that it’s only for native speakers. This session addresses the dual challenges of learning to read while mastering a new language and equips attendees with evidence-based strategies to create inclusive practices to enhance reading instruction for ALL students. \nTraining Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the characteristics of dyslexia and its impact on reading development.\nLearn how the brain processes information during reading acquisition.\nDefine the Science of Reading – including its principles and misconceptions – and the pedagogical approaches to teaching literacy that meet the specific needs of dyslexic and multilingual learners.\nIdentify the additional support English learners need to develop literacy skills in English while simultaneously building their oral language skills.

SUMMARY:Understanding and Supporting Dyslexic Learners: Unlocking the Power of the Dyslexic Brain - Twin Falls
DESCRIPTION:This is a Twin Falls District Sponsored Training for Twin Falls Employees only. This course will delve into the neurobiological origin of dyslexia as well as characteristics of the dyslexic brain at all stages of life. Participants will learn about different screening and identification processes and instructional strategies that address the challenges that dyslexic learners face as well as the strengths they possess. You will be engaged through many effective learning activities including role playing\, group discussion\, and hands-on activities designed to help you gain a deep understanding of a dyslexic student. \nThe course will deepen teachers’ understanding of how children learn to read and will introduce The Five Essential Components of Reading Instruction. You will leave with strategies and resources to be used in your classroom\, including the importance of scaffolding instruction. \nUpon completion of this class and course requirements\, you may earn 1 FREE credit through ISU. This is the credit required for recertification in 2025.

DESCRIPTION:NEA’s Annual Meeting takes place during the final week of June and/or the first week of July. Various committees\, constituencies\, caucuses\, leadership groups\, and delegates from state and local affiliates gather to set policy and chart the direction of NEA business.\n\nThe Representative Assembly (RA) takes place during the final four days of the Annual Meeting. It is the primary legislative and policymaking body of the Association and derives its powers from\, and is responsible to\, the membership. The Representative Assembly adopts the strategic plan and budget\, resolutions\, the Legislative Program\, and other policies of the Association. Delegates vote by secret ballot on proposed amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws. Those delegates with full voting rights elect the executive officers\, Executive Committee members\, and at-large members of the NEA Board of Directors\, as appropriate.\n\nThe RA consists of approximately 6\,000 educator delegates representing state and local affiliates\, student members\, retired members\, and other segments of the united education profession. Further information on the RA is contained in Article III of the Constitution and in Bylaw 3. The RA is the largest democratic deliberative assembly in the world and adheres to Roberts Rules of Order.
